Book review: Kindred by Octavia E Butler

 Book description:

Dana is celebrating with her husband when she is suddenly snatched from her home and transported to the antebellum south. She sees a young boy drowning and Dana goes to save him. Dana keeps being pulled back and stays longer and longer. Each time she is pulled back, it becomes more dangerous.

Book review:

This book was an interesting take on time travel, and the mysterious way it was working to take Dana back. This book gives you a look on what it was like when slavery was still in play in the United States, and how brutal it was for black people. I feel like everyone should read this book at least one time in their life. After reading this book, I want to read more by Octavia Butler.

Book review: The New Girl by Cassandra Calin

 Book description:

Lia and her family are leaving Romania and going to Canada. During the move, Lia gets her first period. She is already struggling with school, friends, and a new language while trying to manage her period.

Book review:

This book really captures the struggles of a preteen/teen and captures the struggles of an immigrant. I do like graphic novels like this that capture the emotions of the main character without minimizing what she is going through or what others around her are going through.

Book review: House of Frank by Kay Synclaire

 Book description:

Saika is ready to plant her sisters ashes at Ash Gardens. She is welcomed by the owner, Frank, who offers her a job at Ash Gardens. Saika accepts, trying to put off putting her sister to rest. As a powerless witch, there isn't much for Saika to do. The longer she stays, the more she learns about love, grief, and family.

Book review:

I thought this was ok. It was great as a debut novel but forgettable among all the other great books out there in my opinion. It might have been that cozy fantasy just isn't my thing. I have heard to many people say that they cried after reading this and I didn't feel like that when I finished. Good start for people trying to get a start in fantasy. It seemed like we got very simple answers to why the characters were there and I didn't really like how they interacted with each other cuz it felt like they were being mean to each other half the time.
I felt a similar way to Legends and Lattes.

Book review: Lady Flyer by Heather B Moore

 Book description:

At 16, Nancy Harkness gets her pilot's license. As WW2 is brewing Nancy is determined to fly for the war effort. She not only has to ferry planes but also has to battle the sexism within aviation to prove that women can fly just as good as the men.

Book review:

I had high hopes for this book based on what I read about it. In my opinion it was written by telling and not showing, and I struggled getting through. I wanted to see her actually in the air and not just talking about the flights she did. I know this is historical fiction, but I feel like some of at least the angst she had against Jackie Cochran, could have been resolved if they actually talked to each other instead of trying to let things go to make sure people didn't perceive them to be fighting against each other. Also the amount of time she talks about bob or is talking to bob takes up a lot of time. I will say this book might be good for people who are just starting out in historical fiction, and will be good for a teen.

Book review: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

 Book description:

Katniss has been taken to District 13 from the arena. Her home is destroyed. Districts are rebelling and Katniss has to decide her involvement in it.

Book review:

I appreciate this book a lot more now that I'm older. I understand how Katniss is having a hard time making decisions about her life and what she wants for herself. She doesn't get a break from something bad happening. She is also a teenager when this is happening and I would be confused also in her position. It must be hard for her to decide her future when she has been in survival mode for years and just wants to protect her family, while also having other people trying to push her to their side.
